Mrs Audrey Swales is trying to piece together what happened to her late husband, Deryk, who died last year aged 79.

Mr Swales, of Ravenoak Lane, Worsthorne, died from asbestosis, the lung disease which develops as a result of exposure to asbestos. He had lived for most of his life in Burnley and worked at the English Electrical Company and at hospital sites in the area.

Solicitor Katrina London, of law firm Irwin Mitchell, is representing Mrs Swales. She said: “Audrey believes Deryk was exposed to asbestos during the course of his working life at the English Electrical Company and Burnley hospitals during the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, and we would like to hear from anyone who worked with and knew Deryk Swales at either of these locations.

Carpenters ‘face asbestos death’

One in 17 UK carpenters born in the 1940s will die of the asbestos-related lung cancer mesothelioma, researchers predict. They also calculated the deadly disease would strike one in 50 plumbers, electricians and decorators and one in 125 other construction workers. The UK mesothelioma death rate is now the highest in the world, with 1,749 deaths in men in 2005.

The study appears in the British Journal of Cancer. The researchers calculated the lifetime risk of the disease among workers exposed to asbestos for more than a decade before the age of 30. Their findings were based on interviews with more than 600 patients with mesothelioma and 1,400 healthy people.

Over all, the projected lifetime risk of fatal meothelioma in all British men born in the 1940s was about one in 170. For every case of mesothelioma, asbestos also causes about one case of lung cancer, so the overall risk of asbestos-related cancer for carpenters born in the 1940s was about one in 10.

The authors also found that around two-thirds of all British men and a quarter of women had worked in jobs involving potential asbestos exposure at some time in their lives. There was also a small increased risk in those who had lived with someone who had been exposed to asbestos.

$2.25 million awarded in asbestos death.

A Buffalo jury has ordered a St. Louis-based supplier of industrial control valves and control systems to pay the estate of a Niagara Falls man $2.25 million for the former Hooker Chemical repairman’s death from cancer, court officials confirmed Wednesday.

Following a six-week trial, the jury held Fisher Controls financially liable for the asbestos-caused mesothelioma that killed Ronald Drabczyk. He died at 70 on Nov. 29, 2005, nine years after his retirement from the Niagara Falls plant.

Lower Your Asbestos Removal Cost

The Asbestos removal cost is a small price to pay for the safety of your health and that of anyone in your property. If you have damaged or distressed asbestos containing materials in your property, they can release dangerous asbestos fibres which are a serious health risk. This situation can be avoided by the safe removal of any asbestos containing materials in your building.

A complete Asbestos removal cost will include the identification of asbestos materials in your home and the implementation of the appropriate removal procedure. There are many places within buildings where asbestos can be found including asbestos tiles, guttering and drainpipes.

In all instances if the asbestos material has been damaged then it is essential that it is removed by following the correct procedures. Ultimately, whatever the Asbestos removal cost, it is a very small price to pay for the safety of you and other occupants of your property.

While it can be tempting to do a ‘DIY’ job on the removal of any asbestos products to reduce the asbestos removal cost, you could put yourself in grave danger. Any asbestos removal process will disturb asbestos fibres causing some to be released, if you’re not properly protected the asbestos removal cost may be to your health.

How Do I Get the Best Asbestos Removal Cost?

Asbestos removal should only be done by a certified professional who is trained to seal off the affected area, remove, and properly dispose of asbestos. If the process is not completed correctly, it could pose major health threats to those who frequent the area affected, as well as surrounding areas as the asbestos fibers will travel in the air.

Keep in mind that when a person is exposed to asbestos fibers in the air, their chances of developing health problems in later years is increased . Lung and stomach cancer are the results of long-term or high exposure to airborne asbestos fibers. Asbestos can be found in popcorn ceilings, floor tiles, insulation, old house heaters, and various other locations in a building.

Check with a number of different asbestos removal professionals to obtain price quotes and choose the option that will work best for your situation. Some contractors will charge a set fee, regardless of the size of the job. Others will charge by the amount of work involved, therefore if removal has to be done in various locations the cost can easily be driven in to the thousands. The asbestos removal cost will more than likely be determined by how many different areas are affected and the difficulty of the removal process.

Your home or business should first be inspected by a removal company, and then a different company should be contracted to do the removal. After this, you should contact the company that did the inspection to do a follow up appointment. This forms a sort of checks and balance system so that you get the best service for your money and the deteriorating asbestos out of your residence.

Be sure that any asbestos removal cost includes the clean up and disposal as well. There are state and federal regulations that removal companies have to follow, and you should see these outlined in any contract that you sign. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints or problems about a removal company.

Asbestos encapsulation refers to the actual sealing of asbestos within a protective shell. This is done for a number of reasons, but the main reason is that removing all asbestos materials from some structures is nearly impossible. Therefore, various manufacturers have devised capsules that are meant to contain all asbestos toxins without demolishing an entire structure.

In fact, scientists have discovered that attempting to remove asbestos from a building is more harmful than simply covering it up. When asbestos has been disturbed, small particles of the toxin drift into the air. As a result, an air space can quickly become contaminated. Therefore, the best solution is to manage asbestos by containing it using asbestos encapsulation techniques.

Any exposure to asbestos is a health risk. Asbestos has been directly linked to lung cancer, fatal asbestos disease, mesothelioma, emphysema, and gastric cancer. Interestingly, exposure to a low level of asbestos seems to cause as much health damaged as exposure to a high level of asbestos. Homeowners and building owners that own structures laced with asbestos are urged to contain this harmful toxin as quickly as possible.

Asbestos encapsulation is a lot more cost-effective than completely removing asbestos. As previously mentioned, the removal of asbestos is not recommended, though this procedure is possible with professional help. While asbestos removal is an expensive procedure, simply covering up an asbestos problem with encapsulation proves to be a much cheaper alternative.

While it might not seem safe to cover asbestos, the truth of the matter is that asbestos encapsulation is a very safe procedure when done correctly. However, any pipes or materials containing asbestos that are not in good condition should not be maintained. Pipes and materials that are not in good shape should be removed from a building by experts as quickly as possible.

Many asbestos encapsulation products on the market can be used by consumers, though this is not always recommended. In order to ensure that asbestos does not seep into the air, this toxin must be properly contained. Therefore, hiring a professional contractor to apply encapsulation materials is the best course of action.

There are many different asbestos encapsulation products available, and which product is used depends on what type of surface or item is getting the asbestos encapsulation. There are types of asbestos encapsulation for surfaces that reach high temperatures, and types of asbestos encapsulation for pipes, pipe coverings, beams, ceilings, and other materials.

Asbestos encapsulation can also be done by sealing off any areas containing asbestos with an air proof barrier, which can be made from sheetrock, plywood, polyethylene, plastic, plaster, or paint.

The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t recommend asbestos encapsulation where the asbestos is more than one inch thick, water damaged, has poor cohesive strength, or where the asbestos is accessible to the people who are using the building. In these instances it is better to remove the asbestos to minimize the risk to the occupants of the building.

Asbestos Flooring – What is asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring?

This fact sheet provides information regarding asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring and vinyl tiles containing asbestos. Asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring is where the “backing” contains friable (easily broken) asbestos material. The vinyl sheeting itself does not contain asbestos, however, manufacturers sometimes incorporated a felt-like ‘backing’ for cushioning purposes. It is this backing which contains asbestos.

Usually applied in sheet form, a lot of asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring had a ‘terrazzo’ type pattern look on the surface. It is most commonly found in buildings constructed before the mid-1980s.

What is the risk of exposure from asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring?

As the asbestos backing is sealed from the atmosphere by the overlaying vinyl, the risk of exposure to airborne fibres from asbestos flooring is low unless the vinyl material is damaged or disturbed. Minor defects such as cracks, peeling or small worn patches in the surface vinyl will generally not cause asbestos to become airborne. However, asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring with such minor defects must not be subject to mechanical abrasion as such activities may cause further deterioration.

In cases where vinyl sheet flooring has been damaged to the extent where the asbestos containing material on the underside is disturbed, a hazard assessment must be undertaken by a competent person to assess what control
measures must be implemented to control any risk. For more information on a competent person, refer to the Identifying and recording asbestos in the workplace fact sheet.

Where asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring is to be removed, it must only be removed by an A Class certificate holder in accordance with the Workplace Health and Safety Regulation 2008. The removal of asbestos backed vinyl sheet flooring must be performed in according with the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos 2nd edition.

What are asbestos containing vinyl tiles?

Asbestos vinyl tiles contain 8-30 per cent asbestos in a tightly bonded matrix. They do not have a ‘backing’ and are usually glued directly to the floor. It should be noted that glue used to adhere the asbestos vinyl tiles to the floor may also contain asbestos.

What is the risk of exposure from asbestos containing vinyl tiles?

Exposure to asbestos from asbestos containing vinyl tiles that are in good condition is thought to be very low. Floor care treatment systems that include the use of a sealant over which the finish coats are applied should be used on asbestos containing vinyl tiles. Two or more layers of sealant should be applied as a base coat followed by one or
more layers of a high percentage solids finish. Spray buffing or dry burnishing should only be performed on floors that have sufficient finish so that the pad cannot contact the underlying asbestos vinyl tile. There are certain activities which are prohibited:

using power tools with an abrasive mechanism to clean asbestos containing materials

using high pressure spray equipment (e.g. water blasting) to clean asbestos containing materials.

Where 10m2 or more of asbestos containing vinyl tiles are to be removed, and the asbestos remains in a bonded state, it must only be removed by an A or B class certificate holder . The removal of asbestos containing vinyl tiles must be performed in accordance with the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos 2nd edition.

How to Identify and Dispose of Asbestos Flooring

Many experts say that instead of removing the asbestos vinyl, risking more exposure due to disrupting the tiles, you can do a better job of keep the exposure limited or dormant simply by covering it up. Doing this will prevent damage that can cause a release in asbestos fibers, risking the chance of inhalation.

If you are using carpet to cover up the vinyl, make sure you are using a well insulated carpet pad. If the asbestos vinyl is in your kitchen area, consider covering it up with a ceramic tile or different linoleum. Even if you have done all of these cover-up precautions, if the time comes where you must sell your home, as a courtesy, it would be proper to make note to the future home owners that there was an asbestos problem and that you fixed it by covering it up with reliable products.

This will save the new owners from any surprises if they ever want or need to tear the asbestos flooring up and will get them properly prepared to avoid any asbestos exposure.

Asphalt-asbestos floor tiles were produced at first in dark colors using a heavy asphalt binder combined with a very high percentage of asbestos filler fibers. It would be uncommon to find these floors still in use today, but if you encounter black or very dark asphalt floor tiles they are probably very high in asbestos fibers.

The black tiles shown at left were not dated and may be a newer product, but in general, if you find very old black floor tiles they are probably an asphalt-asbestos product.

Depending on the particular mixture of asphalt, gilsonite, asbestos, limestone, and pigment used, these floor tiles could contain as much as 70% asbestos by weight. One reason that so much asbestos was used in flooring tiles was simply the wish to find an application for asbestos waste product from asbestos mining operations.

Asphalt -asbestos tiles that were manufactured early in the product life (1920’s) were either black, near black, brown, or a gray-brown tone. Dark vinyl-asbestos tiles used, for example, a mixture of 40 parts asphalt or gilsonite, 60 parts asbestos floats, 30 parts powdered limestone, and pigments (parts by weight). Another typical mixture cited by Rosato contained 70% asbestos fiber.

Where do you find these?

Sometimes you may find asbestos floor tiles hidden under carpets. Textiles can be found in fuse boxes behind the actual fuse. Old fire blankets and heat resistant gloves can also be made out of asbestos textiles. Asbestos composites can be toilet cisterns and seats, window sills, and bath panels. Asbestos paper was used for lining under tiles and inside metal cladding.

What do these look like?

These asbestos containing materials are not very distinctive from what is used now. To make sure we recommend you ask the owners about how long they’ve had certain things or look for a trade name. You should be able to look up this trade name on the internet to find out more about it.

Why Asbestos Was Used in Floor Tiles ?

Almost all floor tiles manufactured in the past few decades until the mid 80’s contained asbestos. Previously these tiles were available in the size 9′X9′ and more recently 12′X12′. Manufacturers of floor tiles preferred using asbestos because asbestos not only made the manufacturing process much easier than other conventional materials, but was extremely durable and cost-effective. These tiles were vinyl-asbestos floor tiles manufactured from polyvinyl chloride polymers.

These tiles usually consisted of a mixture of limestone, asbestos, plasticizer, stabilizer, binder, and pigment. The mixture was usually heated to temperatures of 300 degrees F and fed into a roller to be pressed to the desired thickness. They were then pressed through cylinders to gain uniform thickness, after which pigmenting and surface designs were done while the tiles were still hot and soft. The tiles were then cooled by immersion in water, water-spraying, or placed in a cooling unit. They were then cut into appropriate size and waxed, ready for the market.

Risks Involved with Asbestos Floor Tiles

Living in a home with asbestos floor tiles does not mean that you run the risk of asbestos exposure. The asbestos fibers are firmly embedded into the tiles and pose no risk unless the tiles are deliberately broken and asbestos fibers allowed to contaminate the air.

If you have got wooden flooring beneath the asbestos floor tiles and want to restore the wooden floor, take care. The asbestos tiles have to be removed with the glue underneath. This must be done with extreme care, making sure that no power tools are used to remove the tiles. This could damage the tiles and release asbestos in your home. Also the best way to restore the wooden flooring is to sand it. This is very harmful, since asbestos particles embedded in the glue will separate and get airborne.

One way of changing the flooring is to cover asbestos floor tiles with new non-asbestos tiles or flooring material. This makes sure that you need not disturb the asbestos tiles, and the risk of asbestos exposure due to the tiles is eliminated.

Many prefer removing and getting rid of the old asbestos floor tiles before replacing them with new tiles. If you are doing this yourself, be very careful. Certain asbestos tiles will not come off easily and will require brute force to dislodge them. This is dangerous because the tiles risk being broken and splintered, releasing harmful asbestos fibers in the air. It may take just a day or two to get rid of the old asbestos tiles and fix new ones, but if the asbestos fibers are concentrated in the room, it could cause serious health problems much later in life.

Test for Asbestos – Search For The Devil

Test for asbestos seeks to detect the presence of asbestos in any given material. When any asbestos containing material is disturbed, it releases very thin invisible fibers that may remain suspended in the air for many hours, and have a causative association with a plethora of disease manifestations involving the epithelial lining of human visceral cavities, including the deadly mesothelioma. Much asbestos containing material is being unearthed nowadays due to intense remodeling and renovation of old structures, dating back to days when asbestos was extensively used in construction.

Asbestos Testing- When?

EPA’s Sample List of Suspect Asbestos-Containing Materials Exit Ecology lists the possible candidates for asbestos testing. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. Any surfacing agent or thermal insulation material used in buildings constructed earlier than 1980 is presumed as containing asbestos (WISHA Interim Interpretive Memorandum #99-1-C, January 19, 1999), until proved otherwise by laboratory analysis.

The homes selected are a sample of the more than 260 residences where outdoor areas were cleaned of “Libby asbestos” contamination from the long-closed Western Mineral Products/W.R. Grace plant at 1720 Madison St. EPA conducted a series of cleanups starting in 2000 in the Holland, Logan Park and Sheridan neighborhoods. EPA will now assess indoor dust and air to confirm that “Libby asbestos” fibers from the Western Mineral plant have not gotten into homes.

Mailings to the 30 to 50 homes will arrive in the next few days. EPA outreach staff will then contact residents and owners for voluntary access permission. Generally, EPA’s technicians will collect samples of air and dust from two locations in each home using environmental monitoring equipment.

Laboratory analysis of the samples collected may take up to four months to process and evaluate, with the results provided to residents and owners of the tested homes. If necessary, based on the data generated in September, EPA may schedule a second round of test for asbestos on an additional group of homes in early 2009.

How to Test For Asbestos ?

There are several different ways that you can test your home to see if you or family is being exposed to asbestos. You can contact a company who specializes in the detection, clean up and removal of asbestos. If you choose to go with one of these companies, make sure that they are licensed and bonded and come with a list of referrals to ensure that you are going with a company who puts their client’s health and safety first.

If you feel up to the task, you may also test for asbestos exposure yourself with a do-it-yourself kit. You can get these from a number of sources. Many of them are mail-in tests what will provide you with all of the necessary items you need to conduct the asbestos test. You start testing for asbestos by using the proper respiratory protection such as a mask and body suit (make sure that all hair, including facial hair) is not exposed as asbestos easily clings to hair, risking further exposure.

Wearing proper gloves, completely wet the sample you are going to take with a spray bottle to eliminate the chance that any part of the insulation will go airborne. Using a razor knife or chisel, section out the desired piece of wall or flooring for sampling. Make sure to get all layers of flooring or wall to ensure you gather all traces of asbestos.

Asbestos Removal Companies – Asbestos Removal Profesional

Asbestos is one of the scariest and frightening things that we can ever find in our homes. Asbestos is a mineral which is made up of millions of very tiny fibers. The problem with these fibers is that they are so small they can easily become airborne.

If the fibres are inhaled then they can cause many health complaints, many of which are ultimately fatal. If anyone is exposed to a high amount of asbestos fibres in the air then there is a much bigger risk that this person will develop cancer or other related conditions. Asbestos is seen as a very dangerous substance, and although there have been no safe thresholds identified, it is very important to avoid all contact with it.

The best way to remove asbestos while remodeling your home is to hire asbestos removal companies leading a team of certified professionals. There are many asbestos removal companies who undertake the projects of asbestos removal; therefore you should consider the following tips before hiring a asbestos removal contractor so that you should not get into the wrong hands.

The contractor should have a license issued by the local authority to do the job of removing asbestos in your state. You should speak to the previous clients about services offered by the contractor to them so that you should get a clear picture, whether the contractor is providing good services or not. You can also check out the reviews and testimonials of the contractor by visiting the website. You should try to obtain multiple bids from various contractors in order to get a competitive picture which will help you to choose the best contractor.

If you’re considering removing of asbestos yourself, consider this is saving a few dollars worth risking your long-term health? A professional asbestos removal company – has the tools and the gear necessary to safely dispose of asbestos. They know precisely how to handle the toxic material to keep safety at a maximum. Better still, they can dispose of it for you, meaning that you don’t have to worry about finding an approved spot or getting the right packaging to transport it safely. Considering the health concerns and the complex logistics of removing asbestos, it makes sense to let trained professionals do it for you.

Asbestos removal is the process of ridding a building or material of the asbestos that it may have been originally built with. Abatement companies all over California are busy with asbestos removal, in part due to the influx of asbestos litigation and mesothelioma lawsuits. Asbestos removal by a professional abatement company is only a fraction of the cost of a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Asbestos litigation can cost a company millions while asbestos removal companies only costs a few thousand dollars by comparison. Granted, large companies may have to spend more than a drop in the bucket to an abatement company for adequate asbestos removal, but it is still only a drop in the bucket when compared to the cost of a mesothelioma lawsuit, not to mention the human cost.

By following through with asbestos removal, juries do notice that there is obvious concern for employee health at a later time and do take that into consideration. Most asbestos removal companies who are involved in asbestos litigation are under new management or ownership by the time asbestos litigation is filed, and the public appreciates a minimal effort of asbestos removal.

Of course, this changes nothing for a mesothelioma victim, and asbestos litigation is still necessary in order to attain the financial means needed to fight for their lives. Doing something is still better than doing nothing.

Asbestos Pipe Insulation – Background Of The Invention

Asbestos, a fibrous form of magnesium and calcium silicate ore, is a friable material which may release microscopic fibers into the air. This presents a health hazard to workers responsible for removing asbestos-containing insulation materials. Consequently, elaborate provisions and regulations have been enacted to control the removal of these materials to minimize risk to workers.

Asbestos containing materials have been used to insulate pipes and valves in chemical processing plants, commercial and residential buildings, and in other installations requiring Asbestos Pipe insulation and fire resistant coverings. It has now been documented that exposure to asbestos may lead to cancer. Cancer-related maladies linked to asbestos are generally classified into five different categories, including asbestosis, a type of pulmonary disease caused by inhalation of asbestos-containing dust; pleural disease, which relates to changes in the pleura caused by inhalation of the asbestos fibers, lung cancer; mesothelioma and cancer of the gastrointestinal tract.

There are various problems associated with the use of glove bags in association with high temperature asbestos insulated piping. Most importantly, the glove bags cannot be effectively used on pipes that have a temperature in excess of 150° F. In certain circumstances, the outer asbestos pipe insulation covering (lagging) of the high temperature piping will have hot spots thereon (caused by fractured insulation) which will tend to melt the glove bag and impair the integrity of the glove bag.

In other circumstances, the temperature of the outer asbestos pipe insulation covering will prevent the adhesives associated with the glove bag from effectively adhering to the surface of the high-temperature piping. In all circumstances, the high temperature (up to 1000° F. for steam lines) will melt the glove bag once the insulation is removed and the surface of the pipe is exposed for the installation of the inspection port. As such, a need has developed in which glove bags can be used in association with high temperature piping for the removal of asbestos therefrom.

If you suspect that you might have asbestos pipe insulation in your attic, around an old pipe or anywhere else in your home, you should not jump into a DIY project any time soon. Call out a few contractors that specialize in asbestos insulation and its removal to see what they advise you to do.

In most cases, you will be instructed to leave the material alone. It is usually best to leave the asbestos containing material in its place. The EPA holds that the only time that any potential health risk exists is when the asbestos fibers are released into the air. Furthermore, not everyone exposed to the fibers will end up showing symptoms of an illness or disease connected to asbestos.

If the contractor deems that your asbestos pipe insulation poses a potential health threat, then he or she will begin the process of removal. There is no need for you to be alarmed. Their procedures will require that you stay clear of the home during the clearing out and cleaning up phase. They will take special precautions to seal off the rest of your living space and will remove the asbestos containing insulation in large pieces so as to minimize particle break down.

Old houses might still have asbestos pipe insulation around the pipes. This type of insulation is no longer installed since there is a health risk associated with it. If you have this type of insulation it can be covered up to lessen the risk, or you can hire asbestos abatement professionals to remove it for you. Nowadays fiberglass steam pipe insulation is usually used.

You can purchase this from a number of different suppliers, including State Supply. State supply makes an easy to install version that is slit down the middle to slide over pipes as well as having a peel and stick adhesive for the lap. The outer surface consists of white Kraft paper that has been bound to aluminum. You can use this type of insulation on copper or iron pipe up to six inches in diameter. It is one inch think and comes in pieces that are three feet long.

For pipe that is located in areas with high traffic, you might want to consider adding a PVC protective covering over the insulation. This will help to keep the steam asbestos pipe insulation from being damaged, as well as helping to further limit the chances that someone will get injured from bumping into a hot pipe. It is not necessary to use this in all areas though if you would like to minimize expenses a bit.

They are mined for their useful properties such as thermal insulation, chemical and thermal stability, and high tensile strength.

Asbestos is commonly used as an acoustic insulator, thermal insulation, fire proofing and in other building materials. Many products are in use today that still contain asbestos.

Asbestos is made up of microscopic bundles of fibers that may become airborne when asbestos-containing materials are damaged or disturbed. When these fibers get into the air they may be inhaled into the lungs, where they can cause significant health problems.

Some of the asbestos related illnesses include asbestosis, in which the complication in the lungs lead to problems related to breathing and cancers.

Here are some precautionary measures to be taken in to account while removing the asbestos from the vinyl tiles:

Always wear a protective equipment like the safety glasses and respirator. Though it brings about poorer vision and harder breathing disability, it is vital to wear the protective gear.

Asbestos removal from any material should be undertaken by the licensed asbestos contractors who have specialized in removal or abatement. These professionals should be well qualified, experienced and knowledgeable about the removal of the asbestos containing materials. They usually have the necessary equipment and the other protective materials for the disposal and removal purposes. They usually carry plastic sheets for stopping the particles from free movement. The vinyl tiles are usually wetted down in order to prevent the airborne nature of the particles when the removal process is going on.

The eradication of the asbestos containing vinyl tiles must be in whole pieces. Remember the material must be in a non friable state. Therefore, it is not at all easy to saw, drill and grind to help the removal process.

The safe removal of the asbestos floor tile or vinyl tiles is a matter of concern. The materials are normally placed in sealed containers and are labeled as dangerous so that no one goes around or near to them. After the the removal of asbestos vinyl tile, then the material should be shifted by the official agent to an EPA approved area for its burial.

Removing this yourself would mean that you are exposing yourself to risks, you do not have the relevant training or the necessary safety equipment which will mean more of the asbestos will get broken up, which ultimately means you will breathe more of the asbestos in making it more likely you will suffer from health problems.

Asbestos Tile Removal Tips

Before you start the task of asbestos tile removal, it is essential that you protect yourself with proper safety gear. You should wear such clothes that completely cover your body. Moreover, you have to wear gloves, a respirator and goggles for the purpose of protection of your hands, lungs and eyes respectively. After the task is done, take a shower to get rid of any asbestos fiber from your body.

There is some equipment that is required to remove asbestos floor tiles. They include – utility knife, metal putty knife, amended water, polyethylene sheets, duct tape, waste disposable bags and boxes. Gather all the mentioned equipment in the working area itself so that you do not have to leave the site in between. Thus, you can prevent contamination of other areas of the house.

Preparation of the working area is very important. A good preparation means minimum exposure of asbestos to the surroundings. Turn of the air conditioners or the heaters of the room. Remove all the movable objects from the floor of the room. Cover up rest of the objects, windows, vents etc., with polythene sheets and seal them up with duct tape.

Proper disposal of the removed asbestos tiles is must to prevent environmental pollution. Put the chunks of tiles into waste boxes and seal them up. Gather up all other debris into the waste bags and seal them up. Mark the bags and boxes that they contain asbestos material and dispose them in the landfill area which is meant to deal with such type of garbage. Do not simply throw it into the garbage bin near your house.

Asbestos Ceiling Tiles – The Construction Industry

Asbestos ceiling tiles was a product that received heavy usage in both residential and commercial buildings up until the 1970s. Today, asbestos-contaminated ceiling tiles can still be found in many older structures, including schools, office buildings and homes.

As design components, ceiling tiles have added an extra measure of convenience, as well as safety by being heat resistant and insulative. In many cases, their use has resulted in less cost to building owners, both in their construction and in the ease of maintaining the systems they conceal.

Before the government began issuing warnings and guidelines concerning asbestos products, construction workers were at a very high risk of being exposed to a number of asbestos-containing materials. Many different companies manufactured asbestos ceiling tiles and some are clearly marked and easy to identify. Others may be less noticeable due to the age of the product. As a result, caution should always be taken when removing old ceiling tiles.

Installers of ceiling tiles were especially at risk of inhaling asbestos fibers because the tiles often needed to be cut, sawed, sanded and grinded in order to fit. Such methods could have easily released asbestos fibers into the air. Before regulations of asbestos were in place, many who worked with these materials did not wear protective equipment to prevent the inhalation of fibers.

The asbestos ceiling tiles were sprayed with a 10% solution of “Wesstrip” and removed immediately. Initially the lower surfaces of the tiles were sprayed, four tiles in each area were removed to give access to the top surface of the other tiles which were then sprayed from both above and below. Screws holding the tiles in place were unscrewed using powered screwdriver and the tiles were removed and bagged essentially intact.

The Need to Remove Your Asbestos Ceiling Tiles

Asbestos is simply unsafe if the material is airborne; hence, contaminated ceiling tiles are only risky if damaged. If you want to remove these tiles from your ceiling, it is best to have a licensed contractor accomplish the work for you.

Though, there may not be an immediate hazard, there can be a health risk sooner or later. It is better you remove the asbestos ceiling tile. If you choose to remove the tiles yourself, you will need to proceed with great care and carefulness. If you observe that your home contains asbestos ceiling tiles, it is sensible to remove them as soon as possible.

Because of the high risk of exposure it is extremely suggested that if it is essential to remove them, get a qualified contractor in to remove your asbestos ceiling tile. If you aren’t certain whether the do contain the deadly matter then have a look for a test kit and let an expert make a decision before you make any drastic movements to the tiles. It is better to be protected then sorry.
